HR Travel Policy
The personal part of a trip should not exceed the business part
If the length of the personal part of the trip exceeds the business part, the personal element of the trip can no longer be considered “incidental” to the business trip. The trip can no longer be viewed as business trip and will be classed as a personal trip. The cost of flights shouldn’t be booked through the Bank’s systems and the cost will be reclaimed from you if the Bank has paid these costs. All related expenses incurred (such as hotel, transport, meals etc) will also be viewed as personal in nature and the Bank won’t reimburse any of these expenses.
There should be no increase in the cost of the trip paid by the Bank
If you add personal time to your genuine business trip, the travel should remain cost neutral to the Bank. Tax authorities generally don’t recognise mixed or dual purpose business trips. Their firm stance is that a trip is either wholly business (with any personal benefit being merely incidental) or wholly personal. For you, this means if there’s an increase in the cost of travel as a result of adding personal time (i.e. extending the dates of travel), then 100% the travel costs will no longer be considered as a business expense and will be reclaimed from you.
